Top 10 Interesting Facts about Ecuador

1) Ecuadorian’s are incredibly proud that their country lies on the equator line, so much so they are the only country in the world to name themselves after a Geographical feature, ‘Republic of the Equator’.

2) You would be forgiven for believing that Mount Everest is the nearest point on Earth to the sun, but you would also be wrong. Mount Chimborazo is 2580 metres nearer to sea level than Everest, but because of its position on the Equatorial bulge it is the furthest point from the Earth’s Centre. This means Ecuador is home to the closest point on Earth to the sun.

3) Guinea Pig is considered a local delicacy in Ecuador, along with many countries in South America. This image from Cusco, Peru shows Jesus enjoying his chosen last supper as Guinea Pig.

4) The Galapagos Island’s are Volcanic Islands that are formed over millions of years, but once the volcanic activity stops, all of the Islands begin slowly (very slowly) falling back into the ocean.

5) There are two ‘uncontacted tribes’ in the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador the tribes of ‘Tanomenane’ and ‘Tagaeri’ are both in deliberate and complete isolation from the modern world.

6) Isabella Island is one of the youngest of the Galapagos Islands, and is shaped just like a Sea Horse.

7) Quito, located in the Andes, is a city that is elevated 2850 metres above sea level, because of this altitude, water will boil at just 90 degrees here.

8) The Galapagos Islands are home to so many animals that are completely unique to the Islands, including the Galapagos Penguin, the Flightless Cormorant, Lava Lizards, Blue Footed Boobies; to name just a few.

9)  The length of each day in Ecuador varies only slightly through out the year, because of the close proximity to the equator they get approximately 12 hours of daylight all year round.

10) In Banos, you can ‘swing at the end of the world’. La Case de Arbol (the tree house) is famous in Ecuador, it looks a little bit scary but the views look amazing.
