10 Interesting Things you didn't know about the Philippines

We have compiled a list of the most interesting and intriguing facts about the Philippines, for you to be amazed by! Check them out!

1. The Philippines is made up of over 7,000 islands … making it the second largest archipelago in the World. And meaning it has A LOT of fantastic beaches!

2. Karaoke was invented in the Philippines, and once you have visited you will realise this is something they are very proud of. In some areas you can’t walk more than 100 metres between karaoke bars (this is often a home karaoke machine and a collection of red plastic chairs - fantastic).

3. The Philippines is the only country in the world whose flag changes to convey a message. Normally the blue is at the top - but when the country is at war they host the flag upside down with the red at the top.

4. The Philippines is home to the world’s largest snake, ‘the Reticulated Python’, which can reach up to 8.7 metres long. That is longer than the length of a London bus. Crikey.

5. Taal volcano is a volcano in a lake with its own lake, and a little island inside on its own lake. Confusing isn’t it? But also very beautiful.

6. The Yo Yo originated in the Philippines, but it wasn’t made as a toy but rather as a hunting weapon.

7. Manilla is considered the most densely populated city in the World. WOW.

8. Apparently there are 175 different languages spoken in the Philippines - 4 of which have no known speakers (but how do we know about these if no one can speak them? hhhhmmmmmmm).

9. In 2014 the people of the Philippines were nominated number one ‘selfie’ takers of the entire world.

10. Filipino people are VERY superstitious, they strongly dislike the number 13 and will avoid 13 people sitting at the table at any one point!
