10 Interesting facts you didn't know about Malaysia

Here we have compiled for you a list of the most intriguing and interesting facts about the stunning country of Malaysia

1. Malaysia is the home to the world’s largest species of tropical trees - Tualang -  standing proud with a diameter of up to 3 metres at its base and 80 metres tall. That is just 16m shorter than Big Ben. Tualang’s are pretty tall trees.

2. From trees to roundabouts - the roundabout in Putrajaya is 2 miles long and claims to be the largest roundabout in the world. That is one exit you really don’t want to miss!

3. From trees to roundabouts to caves - Malaysia is home to the biggest cave chamber in the world. Sarawak Chamber in Gunung Mulu is large enough to fit The Shard from London inside (as long as you tilt The Shard to around a 45 degree angle).

4. In Malay, the word orang-utan literally translates to ‘man of the forest’ and Borneo and Sumatra are the only places in the world where Orang-utans live in the wild.

5. In Malaysia it is very rude to point with your index finger - to avoid this people point with the index knuckle or their thumbs. Much better.

6. When a person dies in Malaysia their family will guard the coffin to ensure that a cat does not walk over it. It is believed that if a cat walks over the coffin then the deceased person will turn into a Ghoul. Pesky Cats.

7. Jimmy Choo - the very famous shoe designer, was born in Malaysia.

8. Malaysian’s don’t like to do things by halves - another world’s largest - Malaysia is home to the world’s largest hotel. The First World Hotel has 7,351 rooms. Is it the most colourful hotel too? Lovely.

9. The world record holder for the fastest mile ran with a football balanced on your head is held by a Malaysian. Yee Ming Lo completed his mile in 8 minutes and 35 seconds in 2010 - and he didn’t drop the ball once! I wonder how many people are competing for his title?

10. During the Second World War Malaysia was invaded by Japanese soldiers on bicycles. It took them only 45 days to travel through the country.
