10 Amazing Amazon Facts

We have compiled 10 of the most interesting and intriguing facts about the awesome Amazon Rainforest! Check them out!

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest and most biodiverse rainforest in the world, covering more than 40% of South America, and making up more than half of the world's tropical rainforests. It is no wonder it is considered one of the world’s greatest natural resources.

1. 9 Countries own a part of the rainforest; Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Guyana, Bolivia, Suriname & French Guiana. French Guiana is almost made up of entirely  Amazon Rainforest (94.3%).

2. The forestry is so dense in the rainforest that when it begins to rain you wouldn’t need to use your umbrella for about 10 minutes.

3. There are believed to be 50 native tribes living in the Amazon that have never had any contact from the modern world.

4. 20% of the World’s oxygen comes from the Amazon. There are an estimated 390 billion trees. That’s 390,000,000 trees. Wow.

5. There is a second river in the rainforest that is almost as long as the Amazon River, it is Rio Hamza. Why have a lot of people never heard of this river? It is 2.5 miles underground. It is nearly as wide as the Amazon River but its flow is only 3% of that of the Amazon River.

6. As if it didn’t have enough already … the Amazon has PINK DOLPHINS! Inia geoffrensis, is a playful freshwater river dolphin that lives in the rivers of the Amazon.

7. 10 million years ago the Amazon River changed the direction it flowed towards. It used to flow into the Pacific Ocean but because of the rising Andes, today it flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

8. 10% of all the World’s species live in the Amazon Rainforest.

9. The loudest creature in the rainforest is the toucan, who can be heard up to 1.5 miles away.

10. The Amazon River has 16% of all the river water in the world!
