Canada Canada Canada

Where is Canada?
Canada is one of the largest countries in the world, second only to Russia in terms of territorial size and consisting of a total of 3.8 million square miles. Located in the Northernmost part of North America Canada is the neighbouring country of USA, Greenland, Saint Pierre and Miquelon. With such a large landmass Canada has the longest coastline in the world, touching three oceans, The Atlantic, The Arctic, and The Pacific, it also has the largest land border in the world with the United States.

History of Canada
The first inhabitants of Canada were Native Indian peoples, primarily the Inuit who migrated across a land bridge between Siberia and Alaska around 12,000 years ago. The native people lived off the land, some by hunting and gathering and others by raising crops, there was a large amount of warfare between Aboriginal groups as they competed for land and resources. When Europeans, such as missionaries and soldiers explored Canada they brought with them many European diseases that the Aboriginals were not immune to, and subsequently many of them died. Despite this the Aboriginals and Europeans formed strong economic and religious bonds in their first 200 years of coexistence. The French settled here in the 16th and 17th century and continuing to trade much of their land with the British and following the American Revolution many Britain’s also settled in Canada. In 1867 the passing of the British North America Act from the British government granted the French and English leaders of the colony of Canada the status of a self governing  country. In 1969 French was made equal to English throughout the Canadian national government.

Climate in Canada
Due to large landmass Canada's climate varies dramatically depending on your location in the country. Generally Canada follows four very distinct seasons, particularly along the US border. Summers tend to be hot and dry on the prairies, hot and humid in central Canada and mild on the coasts. Autumns are often cool and crisp across the country and Spring a pleasant temperature while winters are generally very cold with plenty of snow, with it being milder and wet along the West Coast.

Language in Canada
English and French are the most widely spoken languages in Canada and are recognised as the ‘Official’ languages of the country. The five most widely spoken ‘non- official’ languages are Chinese, Punjabi, Spanish, Italian and Arabic.

Food in Canada
Canada’s cuisine is a mix of many cultures with many influences from American diets. There are a few uniquely Canadian meals that may take a bit of getting used to! ‘Poutine’ is probably the most popular of these, which consists of french fries, cheese curd and gravy which originates from Quebec. Thick pea soup is a popular comfort food across the country and of course ‘Sugar Pie’s’ and ‘Butter tarts’ made with Canadian maple syrup

Festivals in Canada
Canada hosts a whole array of festivals and events throughout the year and if theres an opportunity to have a knees up you can count on a city, town or village to arrange one! The world famous Montreal Jazz Festival which showcases some of world’s top jazz musicians is probably the countries most famous event, however there are plenty more to keep your eyes open for as well. Visit the largest winter carnival in the world in Quebec which includes plenty of parades, ice sculptures, music and dancing. Or how about the Caribana festival in Toronto which has been running for 40 years as a reminder of the ethnic diversity of the city. This energetic and colourful festival spans over three weeks and attracts over one million visitors each year to get involved in the colourful costumes, music and food of Jamaica, Guyana, the Bahamas and Brazil.

Travelling in Canada
With so much land to travel across you will undoubtedly find yourself taking advantage of many types of transport.

Bus and trams: Buses and trams are the cheapest and most popular way to travel around Canada as they tend to be clean and comfortable and run very regularly. ‘Greyhound’ Canada is the most used bus company due to it’s extensive network around the country and even into the US.

Train: Most of the major cities and towns are connected by train and in some remote parts of the country they provide the only overland access. The train is a more expensive option than the bus but tends to be popular for long journeys due to the speed and comfort it offers. It is cheaper to buy return tickets than one way, and buying your tickets days in advance could make you significant savings.

Bike: During the warmer weather cycling is a particularly popular way to travel and great for experiencing the countries beautiful landscape (esspecially for those on a budget!) Many cities have dedicated bike routes and there are plenty of quiet back roads to take if you plan ahead.

Boat: With it’s huge coastline and abundance of lakes and rivers boats are a common form of transport in Canada. There are regular ferry services between the mainland and surrounding islands.

Changing Worlds will supply you with any advice you need with regards to the visas you require for your chosen destination, and we will make information available to you to assist with your application.

It is important that you check your visa requirements well in advance of your travel date, as with many tourist and working holiday visas you will need to submit an application to the relevant consulate, embassy or high commission before your travel date. In some cases entry to your destination country will be granted at immigration on arrival without having to apply for a visa before the departure date for your travels.

With all visa applications it is important that you have sufficient space available in your passport for the relevant visas required for your travels, and that your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned date of return.

1) What is the minimum age restriction?
The minimum age restriction for this course is 18.

2) Are meals included in this trip?
A continental breakfast is provided 5 days per week from Monday - Friday and Dinner is provided 4 days per week, Monday - Thursday. You will have to budget for lunches and weekend meals and we recommend a budget of approximately $230 per week to cover basic food costs, however many participants make packed lunches using the kitchen facilities provided in accommodation to save money.

3) What accommodation is provided?
Fernie, British Columbia.
Accommodation in Fernie is located at a purpose built 40+ bedroom ski lodge in the heart of the town. Participants taking part in the instructor course in Fernie will have their own queen size bed in a comfortable 2 or 4 person bedroom. All the rooms are en-suite, and all participants have access to a range of awesome facilities, such as restaurant, lounge, kitchen, bar, movie room, games room, sauna, and a ski lodge would not be complete without a hot tub for relaxing those aching limbs after a long day on the slopes.

Banff, Alberta
The accommodation in Banff is located in hotels and hostels in the town centre. Being centrally located the accommodation provides easy access to the local amenities in the town centre, and also provides a great base for nights out and partying with your fellow participants. Participants on the instructor course in Banff will be placed together in either the hotel or the neighbouring hostel, so you will never be on your own in this buzzing ski town. You will be sharing a dorm style/shared room, with a range of facilities and amenities close to hand including, WiFi, kitchen, lounge, swimming pool and laundry facilities.

• What rooms are available?
There is the option to choose a private "single room", twin room or quad room which all vary in price. If you choose to stay in a twin or quad room you will be asked to fill in a mini questionnaire before your trip to help pair you up with similar participants.

Are laundry facilities available at the accommodation?
Yes, laundry facilities are available at the accommodation. Laundry costs are included in your course price.

4) How much time will be spent Skiing or Snowboarding?
You will receive 4 full days of ski or snowboard instruction each week. This split of 4 days on /3 days off gives you the chance to spend the weekend participating in our program of extra
activities. Each week you will have the opportunity to experience different instructors on the course, which is particularly useful if you plan on becoming an instructor as it will expose you to different teaching styles.

5) What experience do I need?
You do not need any specific experience to join this course. Participants can range from beginners to more experienced skiers or snowboarders, as everyone is put into a group to match their level, however it is important that you have a keen interest in skiing or snowboarding!

6) What support will I receive in country?
Our in country team of coordinators and instructors will be on hand to support you throughout your trip, whether it’s to do with the course itself or arranging extra excursions in your spare time.

You will also receive a careers seminar at the end of your course which is hosted by the technical director of the resort, including advice on successfully looking for an instructor job, applying for a working holiday visa, and a manual with useful tips such as a sample CV, contact details for ski schools and info on where your qualification is recognised.

7) What can I do in my free time?
Your time in Canada is about much more than gaining your instructor qualification, and we have developed a wide selection of extra excursions to make sure you experience life on the slopes to the max! Each excursion is worth a certain number of credits, each being worth $10. Included in your course package are 25 credits which you can spend any way you wish, and can also be topped up if you decide to get involved in more activities, thus allowing you to pick and choose exactly what you do in your spare time!

On the second night of your course you will attend a presentation by the Course Director who will go over the course calendar and explain which extra excursions are available and how to book up.

After this, participants have the opportunity to continue with their instructor training and go for their Level 2 qualification. The CSIA qualification is recognised all over the world, however the level 1 is generally only accepted to teach in Canada, and it is a lot more difficult togain work with this elsewhere. The level 2 qualification is much more widely accepted across the world, and past participants have gone on to coach in resorts across Europe after completing the course.

9) How Easily Can I Get Paid Work After Completing the Course?
Every year Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR) employ hundreds of ski instructors at their four Western Canada resorts: Fernie, Kicking Horse, Nakiska and Kimberley and due to their confidence in this ski or snowboard instructor course they guarantee interviews to participants that have passed.

During your course you will also have the chance to take part in work experience where you can shadow experienced instructors, gaining hands on experience and learning new techniques. This will significantly improve your chances of employment and help you stand out from the competition.

10) When can I arrive?
You will need to arrive on the start date provided in order to receive transport from the airport to your accommodation.

11) Will I need a Visa?
If you plan on just completing the instructor course you will not be required to apply for a visa. Most international visitors, including those from the UK, do not require a visa and can stay in Canada for up to 6 months with a valid passport. However, if you wish to gain paid working after completing the course you will need to apply to a working holiday visa, which will allow you to work in Canada for up to 12 months if you are between the age of 18-30. Over 30’s will need to be sponsored by a ski school.
